SEND Teaching Assistant

Job Description

Zest Education is currently recruiting for a resilient, compassionate, and dedicated Teaching Assistant to join a supportive primary school in Tamworth. This is a full-time role starting in September, supporting pupils with a range of complex additional needs across the school.

This rewarding position will involve working with children ranging from Nursery through to Year 5, supporting pupils with high levels of SEND and helping them access education in a safe, positive, and meaningful way.

About the Role

As a SEND Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with pupils who require significant additional support throughout the school day. Some children present with high SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) needs and may find the classroom environment challenging, often requiring personalised strategies to support their engagement and emotional regulation.

You will be responsible for building strong, trusting relationships with pupils, helping them feel secure, understood, and supported. The role requires someone who can remain calm under pressure, adapt to changing situations, and provide consistent support to children who may become dysregulated and require additional intervention.

This is an opportunity to make a genuine difference in the lives of vulnerable children and become part of a committed and supportive school team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support pupils with a range of SEND needs across Nursery to Year 5.
  • Build positive relationships with children who require additional emotional and behavioural support.
  • Help pupils access learning both within and outside the classroom environment.
  • Support children with emotional regulation and engagement throughout the school day.
  • Implement behaviour support strategies in line with school policies.
  • Work closely with teachers, SEND staff, and external professionals.
  • Promote positive behaviour, resilience, and independence.
  • Provide a safe, nurturing, and consistent presence for pupils requiring additional support.
  • Record observations and contribute to pupil progress and support plans.

The Ideal Candidate

The successful applicant will:

  • Have experience working with children with SEND, SEMH, or behavioural needs.
  • Be calm, patient, and resilient in challenging situations.
  • Understand the importance of consistency, routine, and relationship-building.
  • Be confident supporting children who may struggle to engage in a classroom setting.
  • Have strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Be passionate about helping children overcome barriers to learning.
  • Have experience in education, care, youth work, or a similar support role.
  • Hold a relevant Teaching Assistant qualification (desirable but not essential).
