SEND Teaching Assistant – Year 5/6

Job Description

Zest Education is currently recruiting for a committed and compassionate SEND Teaching Assistant to join a welcoming primary school in Swadlincote. This is a full-time position starting in September, supporting a pupil in Upper Key Stage 2 (Year 5/6) on an ongoing basis.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a supportive school where staff work closely together to ensure every child receives the guidance, encouragement, and support they need to achieve success.

About the Role

As a SEND Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with a Year 5/6 pupil, providing tailored support throughout the school day. You will help the child access learning, remain engaged during lessons, and develop the confidence needed to make progress both academically and socially.

In addition, you will collaborate with the class teacher and SENDCO to implement effective support strategies and adapt learning activities where necessary. Through your support, you will help create a positive and inclusive environment where the pupil can thrive.

Because consistency plays a key role in pupil development, the school is looking for someone who can build strong relationships, provide encouragement, and become a trusted adult within the school setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide dedicated support for a Year 5/6 pupil with additional learning needs.
  • Help the pupil engage with classroom activities and curriculum content.
  • Implement personalised learning and support strategies.
  • Encourage independence, resilience, and self-confidence.
  • Support social and emotional development throughout the school day.
  • Work closely with teaching staff to monitor and celebrate progress.
  • Adapt resources and activities to meet individual needs.
  • Foster a positive, structured, and inclusive learning environment.

The Ideal Candidate

The successful applicant will:

  • Have experience working with children with SEND or additional learning needs.
  • Be patient, understanding, and nurturing in their approach.
  • Demonstrate strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Be confident supporting pupils within Key Stage 2.
  • Show initiative while working effectively as part of a wider team.
  • Have a genuine passion for helping children achieve their full potential.
  • Be reliable, professional, and committed to providing consistent support.
  • Hold a relevant Teaching Assistant qualification (desirable but not essential).
