As another school year draws to a close, classrooms begin to look a little different. Displays come down, cupboards are tidied, books are packed away, and there is a mixture of excitement, relief, pride, and perhaps a touch of uncertainty in the air.
For teachers and supply staff, this is a time to reflect on everything you’ve achieved. It hasn’t always been easy. There have been challenging days, unexpected changes, moments of laughter, and countless small victories that often go unnoticed. Whether you’ve been with one class all year or supported many different schools as a supply teacher, you’ve made a difference.
Every smile you shared, every encouraging word, every lesson you taught, and every child you helped has left a lasting impact. Education is about far more than tests and reports—it’s about helping children grow in confidence, resilience, and kindness. Take a moment to recognise just how valuable your contribution has been.
The summer break is also your opportunity to rest. Teaching is rewarding, but it is also demanding. Give yourself permission to switch off, spend time with loved ones, enjoy your hobbies, and recharge. Looking after yourself is just as important as looking after your pupils.
For supply staff, the end of the year can bring additional uncertainty as you wait to see what September will bring. Remember, your flexibility, professionalism, and willingness to step into new environments are incredible strengths. Every classroom you’ve entered has benefited from your care and expertise, even if you were only there for a day. Zest Education is here to help all through the summer holidays so please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you need support, reassurance, or just a chat about our current vacancies.
And to the pupils preparing for a new school year…
It’s completely normal to feel a little nervous.
Maybe you’re moving into a new classroom with a different teacher. Perhaps you’re starting secondary school or joining a brand new school altogether. Big changes can feel exciting and worrying at the same time.
Remember that everyone starts somewhere. The friends you’ll meet, the teachers who will support you, and the experiences you’ll have are all waiting just around the corner.
It’s okay if you don’t know where every classroom is on the first day.
It’s okay if you feel butterflies in your tummy.
It’s okay to ask questions.
Every older pupil in your new school once stood exactly where you are now.
Use the summer to enjoy being a child. Read a good book, play outside, spend time with family and friends, discover new hobbies, and make wonderful memories. September will arrive soon enough, and you’ll be more ready than you think.
As this school year comes to an end, let’s celebrate every achievement—big or small. Celebrate the progress made, the friendships formed, the challenges overcome, and the resilience shown by pupils and staff alike.
To every teacher, teaching assistant, supply teacher, support worker, lunchtime supervisor, office staff member, caretaker, cleaner, and volunteer—thank you for helping schools become places where children can learn, grow, and thrive.
And to every pupil…
Be proud of how far you’ve come.
Believe in yourself.
Enjoy your summer.
Your next chapter is waiting, and it’s full of possibilities!
