1:1 SEND Teaching Assistant – Reception

Job Description

Zest Education is currently recruiting for a compassionate and dedicated 1:1 SEND Teaching Assistant to join a welcoming primary school in Cannock. This is a part-time role, working Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 12:00pm, supporting a child in Reception with Autism.

This rewarding opportunity would suit someone who is passionate about supporting children with additional needs and understands the importance of providing consistent, tailored support during the early years of education.

About the Role

As a 1:1 Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with a Reception-aged pupil who has Autism and is non-verbal. Throughout the morning, you will support the child in accessing classroom activities, engaging with learning opportunities, and developing essential communication and social skills.

In addition, you will work alongside the class teacher and SEND team to implement consistent strategies that support the child’s individual needs. Your ability to build a positive and trusting relationship will play a key role in helping the pupil feel secure, engaged, and ready to learn each day.

The school is looking for a nurturing and patient individual who can provide a calm and supportive presence while encouraging the child’s independence and participation in school life.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide dedicated 1:1 support for a Reception pupil with Autism.
  • Support a non-verbal child to access learning and classroom routines.
  • Encourage engagement through tailored communication strategies.
  • Help develop social interaction, confidence, and independence.
  • Support transitions between activities and different areas of the classroom.
  • Work closely with the class teacher, SENDCO, and wider support staff.
  • Implement individual support plans and communication approaches.
  • Create a safe, positive, and inclusive learning environment.
  • Celebrate achievements and promote positive outcomes.

The Ideal Candidate

The successful applicant will:

  • Have experience supporting children with Autism and additional needs.
  • Understand or be willing to learn alternative communication methods.
  • Be patient, caring, and resilient.
  • Build strong relationships with children, staff, and parents.
  • Remain calm and positive when responding to changing situations.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Have a genuine passion for helping children reach their full potential.
  • Hold a relevant Teaching Assistant qualification (desirable but not essential).
