EYFS Teaching Assistant

Job Description

About the role

A warm and inclusive primary school in Coventry is looking for a dedicated SEND Teaching Assistant to support a Year 1 class on a full‑time basis. This role is ideal for someone with strong EYFS experience, as many of the learning approaches in Year 1 build directly on early years foundations.

You’ll be supporting pupils with additional needs, helping them access learning, develop confidence and feel secure in the classroom. The school is looking for someone patient, proactive and confident working with young children who may need extra emotional or academic support.

Requirements

  • Experience working in a primary school, ideally in EYFS or KS1
  • Strong SEND experience or SEND awareness
  • Ability to support pupils 1:1, in small groups and across the classroom
  • Confident assisting with phonics, early literacy and early numeracy
  • A calm, nurturing and consistent approach
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to follow teacher direction and use initiative
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting pupil wellbeing

 

Day‑to‑day duties

  • Supporting SEND pupils within a Year 1 classroom
  • Helping children stay engaged, regulated and ready to learn
  • Assisting with phonics, early reading and early maths activities
  • Providing 1:1 or small‑group interventions
  • Supporting behaviour using positive, consistent strategies
  • Helping prepare resources and maintain an organised learning environment
  • Working closely with the class teacher and SENDCo
  • Contributing to a safe, inclusive and nurturing classroom

Salary is dependent on experience, training, or qualifications. The minimum experience, training, or qualifications required for this position are recent school-based experience (within the last 5 years within a school that teaches the British Curriculum) and/or care-based experience within the last 5 years.
