Teaching Assistant – Primary School | Fordbridge, Birmingham

Are you an experienced Teaching Assistant looking for a rewarding full-time role in a friendly and supportive primary school?

Do you have previous experience working in a mainstream primary school and an understanding of supporting children with mild Special Educational Needs (SEND).

If so, this could be an excellent opportunity for you.

A welcoming mainstream primary school in the Fordbridge area of Birmingham is looking to appoint a dedicated and compassionate 1:1 Teaching Assistant to provide individual support to a child with additional needs.

This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant or SEND Teaching Assistant who is passionate about helping children overcome barriers to learning and achieve their full potential.

The Role

As a Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with the class teacher and wider school team to provide tailored support to a child with additional needs.

You will play an important role in helping the pupil to access the curriculum, develop their confidence and independence, and participate positively in school life.

The successful candidate will be someone who is patient, nurturing, consistent and proactive, with the ability to build a strong and trusting relationship with the child.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing dedicated 1:1 support to a child with additional needs.
  • Supporting the pupil to access learning and participate in classroom activities.
  • Working alongside the class teacher to adapt and differentiate activities where appropriate.
  • Providing encouragement and positive reinforcement to promote confidence and engagement.
  • Supporting the child’s social, emotional and educational development.
  • Helping the pupil to develop greater independence and self-confidence.
  • Supporting with classroom routines and transitions throughout the school day.
  • Monitoring the child’s progress and communicating observations to the class teacher and relevant school staff.
  • Supporting positive behaviour and helping the pupil to regulate and engage with learning.
  • Building a positive, trusting and professional relationship with the child.
  • Working collaboratively with teachers, SEND staff and other professionals where required.
  • Maintaining a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment.

About the Child

The successful candidate will be supporting a child who requires additional support within a mainstream primary classroom.

The child will benefit from a Teaching Assistant who can provide consistency, reassurance and encouragement throughout the school day.

Experience of supporting children with mild SEND, learning difficulties, communication needs, social and emotional needs or additional learning needs would be highly beneficial.

You do not necessarily need extensive specialist SEND experience. The most important qualities are a genuine passion for supporting children, a patient approach and the ability to build positive relationships.

The Ideal Candidate

The school is looking for a Teaching Assistant who can demonstrate:

  • Previous experience working within a primary school setting.
  • Experience supporting children with mild Special Educational Needs (SEND).
  • A good understanding of the needs of primary-aged children.
  • The ability to provide effective 1:1 learning and pastoral support.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A calm, patient and nurturing approach.
  • The ability to build positive relationships with children.
  • Confidence supporting children who may require additional encouragement or reassurance.
  • A proactive and flexible approach to supporting learning.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a wider school team.
  • A genuine commitment to improving outcomes for children.
  • Reliability, professionalism and a positive attitude.

A relevant Teaching Assistant qualification, such as a Level 2 or Level 3 qualification, would be advantageous but is not essential where the candidate has relevant school-based experience.

Why Apply for This Teaching Assistant Role?

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to make a genuine difference to a child’s education and development.
