Thinking of Becoming a Supply Teacher? Here’s How to Get Started.

With more people seeking flexible careers that offer purpose, becoming a supply teacher is an increasingly popular path – particularly for those who want to make a real difference in education without the long-term commitment of a full-time teaching post.

But how do you actually become a supply teacher? What qualifications do you need? And what are the real benefits of supply teaching in UK primary and secondary schools?

Let us, one of the UK’s leading education recruitment agencies, break it down for you:

Why Supply Teaching Might Be Right for You

Here are just a few reasons why supply teaching works for so many:

Flexibility – Choose when and where you work. Ideal for parents, retirees, or those balancing other commitments.
Variety – No two days are the same. You’ll experience different schools, year groups and classroom dynamics.
Work-life balance – With no staff meetings, performance management or report writing, you can focus purely on the teaching.
Try before you commit – Considering a return to the classroom or thinking about changing sectors? Supply is a low-pressure way to ease in.
Make a difference – Support pupils when they need it most. A great supply teacher can transform a chaotic day into a productive one.

So, if you think working in supply is right for you, here’s how to make sure you succeed:

Step 1: Make Sure You Have the Right Qualifications

To teach in UK schools, whether full-time or on a supply basis, you’ll need:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) – this is essential for teaching in primary and secondary schools across the UK.

Most people gain QTS by completing:

A PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education),

A Bachelor of Education (BEd) or BA/BSc with QTS,

Or via School Direct, SCITT, or Teach First routes.

If you’re not sure if you already hold QTS, you can check with the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA).

  • An up-to-date enhanced DBS check – this checks for any criminal convictions and must be registered on the Update Service so it can be transferred across schools quickly.

Step 2: Choose the Type of Supply Teaching That Suits You

There are a few different ways to work on supply:

  • Daily supply – Perfect for ultimate flexibility. Work when it suits you, no long-term commitment.
  • Short-term cover – Filling in for a few days or weeks (e.g. for sickness or training).
  • Long-term placements – Often a term or more, with planning and marking responsibilities. Great if you want routine without permanent contracts.

Step 3: Register with a Supply Teaching Agency

Most supply teachers in the UK find work through specialist education recruitment agencies – like us here at Zest Education 👋

Here’s what to expect:

  • Submit your CV and references – You’ll need an up-to-date CV that shows experience in UK schools and two relevant references that we can contact via phone, to confirm your teaching experience and professionalism
  • Initial call  – This call will establish exactly what you are looking for and how the agency will be able to help. You’ll usually talk through your experience of working with children and young people, and any pre-interview safeguarding checks, including talking through which references will be needed, will be carried out
  • Registration interview – This will usually take place online with your designated recruitment consultant, and ensures your strengths and preferences are understood. It helps the agency to match you with the right schools and gives you the opportunity to ask any questions
  • Provide documentation – This includes proof of QTS, ID, DBS certificate, and safeguarding training
  • Complete onboarding – Once the registration process has been completed, your file will usually be passed to the agency’s Compliance Team who will ensure that you are legally cleared for work in a school. At this point you’ll also be given a refresher on school behaviour policies, safeguarding responsibilities, and what to expect on your first day of work
