Job Description

Teaching Assistant (Reception / Early Years)

Hours: Full time 08:00-15:30pm
Contract: ASAP Until July 2026 initially

About the role

We are seeking a caring, enthusiastic and committed Teaching Assistant to join our Reception team. You will support learning both across the whole class and in small groups, working with individual children including some with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). You will be part of a forward-thinking, inclusive environment and will contribute to every child making strong progress.

You will have responsibilities such as:

  • Supporting whole class teaching as directed by the teacher (e.g. aiding transitions, reinforcing instructions)

  • Running small group or one-to-one interventions (phonics, early reading, number work, language development)

  • Supporting children with SEND, under the guidance of class teacher / SENCO, adapting resources and strategies

  • Monitoring and recording children’s progress and reporting to the class teacher

  • Contributing to planning and preparing resources

  • Promoting positive behaviour, pastoral support and classroom routines

Person specification

The successful candidate should have:

  • Experience of working with young children (ideally in Early Years or Key Stage 1)

  • A good understanding of early reading, phonics, early number skills and child development

  • Knowledge or willingness to develop understanding of SEN / inclusive practice

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build positive relationships with children, staff and parents

  • Good organisational skills and the ability to manage time and tasks effectively

  • Patience, flexibility and a positive, solution-focused mindset

  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team
