Humanities Teacher (SEND)

Job Description

Job Title: Humanities Teacher (Humanities subjects including History, Geography, Religious Studies etc.)
Contract: Full‑time (Part‑time considered for the right candidate), immediate start; possibility to become permanent for the right candidate
Location: Tamworth, Staffordshire

About the School

  • An independent special school for young people aged 11‑18 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
  • Small cohort (capacity approx. 21 pupils), allowing close, individualised support.

The Role

We are looking for a passionate and creative Humanities Teacher who can deliver engaging lessons across Key Stages 3, 4, and 5. The successful candidate will work with pupils who may have experienced adversity, helping them achieve accredited qualifications, while supporting their personal growth and well‑being.

This role is full time, but we will consider part‑time arrangements for a suitably strong candidate. There is scope for this position to become permanent for the right person.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, prepare, and teach Humanities lessons (history, geography, religious studies or similar), adapting content and delivery to meet individual needs including those with SEMH.
  • Use differentiated, inclusive teaching strategies, and scaffolded support to enable all learners to access subject content.
  • Deliver dynamic lessons that inspire interest, curiosity, and academic progress.
  • Help pupils achieve accredited qualifications (GCSEs or suitable alternatives) where appropriate.
  • Contribute to personal development plans, EHCPs (Education, Health & Care Plans), and ensure the subject contributes to pupils’ holistic progress.
  • Collaborate with pastoral, therapeutic and support staff to align academic work with emotional and social needs.
  • Maintain accurate assessment, feedback, and reporting of pupil progress.
  • Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and wider school improvement activities.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent
  • Strong subject knowledge in Humanities (e.g. History, Geography, RE)
  • Experience planning and delivering engaging, differentiated lessons
  • Excellent behaviour management and classroom control
  • Empathetic, resilient, and adaptable approach
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills

Desirable:

  • Experience teaching students with SEMH or additional needs
  • Ability to teach multiple Humanities subjects
  • Familiarity with trauma-informed and therapeutic practices (e.g. PACE)
  • Experience with GCSE or accredited outcomes
  • Understanding of EHCPs and SEND frameworks
