SEND Teaching Assistant – Y2

Job Description

Zest Education is seeking an enthusiastic and committed SEND Teaching Assistant to support a welcoming primary school in Tamworth. This is a full-time role starting in September, working closely with a Year 2 pupil with Autism on an ongoing basis.

This position offers an excellent opportunity to make a lasting impact on a child’s educational journey while becoming a valued member of a supportive and inclusive school community.

About the Role

As a SEND Teaching Assistant, you will provide specialist support to a Year 2 pupil with Autism, helping them successfully access the curriculum and engage in school life. You will play an important role in creating a positive and structured learning environment where the child feels understood, supported, and encouraged to achieve their potential.

Throughout the school day, you will help the pupil manage transitions, develop confidence, and participate in both classroom activities and wider school experiences. In addition, you will work collaboratively with the class teacher and SEND team to deliver personalised support strategies that meet the child’s individual needs.

The school is looking for someone who can build a strong working relationship with the pupil and provide the consistency that enables them to flourish academically, socially, and emotionally.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver dedicated 1:1 support for a Year 2 pupil with Autism.
  • Help the pupil access lessons and learning activities throughout the day.
  • Encourage independence, confidence, and positive social interactions.
  • Support communication and engagement within the classroom.
  • Implement personalised strategies to meet the pupil’s individual needs.
  • Work closely with the class teacher and SENDCO to monitor progress.
  • Contribute to a calm, structured, and inclusive learning environment.
  • Promote positive outcomes and celebrate achievements, both big and small.

The Ideal Candidate

The successful applicant will:

  • Have experience supporting children with Autism or additional learning needs.
  • Demonstrate patience, empathy, and a child-centred approach.
  • Be confident adapting support strategies to meet individual needs.
  • Have excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Work effectively as part of a team while showing initiative when required.
  • Remain positive, calm, and resilient throughout the school day.
  • Be passionate about supporting pupils to achieve their full potential.
  • Hold a relevant Teaching Assistant qualification (desirable but not essential).
