Year 5 1:1 Teaching Assistant

Job Description

Zest Education is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Teaching Assistant to join a supportive primary school in Tamworth from September. This is a full-time, ongoing role providing 1:1 support for a Year 5 pupil who requires additional assistance to access learning and thrive within the classroom environment.

This is a rewarding opportunity for an experienced Teaching Assistant, SEN Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant, or Child Support Worker who is passionate about helping children overcome barriers to learning and reach their full potential.

About the Role

As a 1:1 Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with a Year 5 pupil diagnosed with ADHD who is currently working below age-related expectations across the curriculum. The pupil is engaging and non-violent but can be vocal and requires consistent support, encouragement, and clear boundaries throughout the school day.

The child is currently awaiting specialist provision, making this role particularly important in ensuring they remain engaged, supported, and successful within the mainstream primary setting.

You will work alongside the class teacher and SENCO to deliver targeted support that promotes both academic progress and positive social development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide dedicated 1:1 support throughout the school day.
  • Help the pupil access learning activities and remain engaged in lessons.
  • Implement strategies to support attention, focus, and emotional regulation.
  • Build a positive, trusting relationship with the pupil.
  • Encourage independence, confidence, and positive behaviour.
  • Adapt learning activities where required to meet individual needs.
  • Work closely with teaching staff and the SENCO to monitor progress and wellbeing.
  • Support the pupil during transitions and less structured parts of the school day.

The Ideal Candidate

The successful applicant will:

  • Have experience working with children in a primary school or similar educational setting.
  • Have experience supporting pupils with ADHD, additional learning needs, or SEND requirements.
  • Be calm, patient, and resilient in their approach.
  • Have strong behaviour management and communication skills.
  • Be confident building positive and professional relationships with pupils and staff.
  • Demonstrate a genuine passion for supporting children’s learning and development.
  • Hold a relevant Teaching Assistant qualification (desirable but not essential).
