Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) – SEN School (Full Time), Walsall

Location: Walsall, West Midlands
Contract: Full-Time hours available (long term work)
Salary: Competitive (dependent on experience)

About the Role

We are seeking a committed and compassionate Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join our dedicated team within a specialist SEN school in the Walsall area. This is a full-time opportunity supporting vulnerable children and young people aged 4–18, many of whom have complex learning needs, social, emotional and mental health difficulties (SEMH), autism (ASC), communication needs, or other additional learning challenges.

The ideal candidate will be confident leading learning, delivering planned activities, and supporting teachers to create an inclusive, nurturing and safe environment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and deliver high‑quality learning activities in line with curriculum plans.
  • Provide tailored support to pupils with diverse and complex SEN needs.
  • Work 1:1 and in small groups to promote independence, engagement, and progress.
  • Assist with planning, behaviour support and assessment under teacher guidance.
  • Create a safe, supportive and positive classroom environment.
  • Build strong relationships with pupils, staff, parents and external professionals.
  • Contribute to whole‑school initiatives that promote wellbeing, safeguarding and inclusion.

About You

We would love to hear from you if you have:

  • HLTA status or relevant Level 4 qualification
  • Experience working in a special educational needs or alternative provision setting.
  • A patient, resilient and empathetic approach to supporting vulnerable young people.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • A passion for helping children and young people achieve their full potential.

Experience with ASC, SEMH, challenging behaviour, PMLD, or complex needs is highly desirable.
