1:1 SEND Teaching Assistant

Job Description

Zest Education is currently recruiting for a dedicated, resilient, and compassionate SEND Teaching Assistant to join a welcoming primary school in Tamworth from September 2026.

This thriving mainstream primary school is well known for its inclusive ethos and commitment to supporting children with additional needs. The role will be based within the school’s specialist SEND provision, where you will play a key role in helping pupils overcome barriers to learning and achieve positive outcomes both academically and emotionally.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is passionate about supporting children with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and is looking for a rewarding long-term role.

About the Role

As a SEND Teaching Assistant, you will primarily support two pupils with high levels of need, one in Reception and one in Year 3. Both children require consistent, nurturing support to help them regulate their emotions, engage in learning, and successfully navigate the school day.

The pupils can experience periods of heightened dysregulation and challenging behaviour, so the successful candidate will need to be calm, patient, and confident in implementing strategies that support emotional regulation and positive engagement.

Building strong, trusting relationships will be central to this role. You will work closely with teachers, SEND staff, and school leaders to provide tailored support that enables each child to make progress and feel safe within the school environment.

When these pupils are not in school, you will support other children across the SEND provision, working with pupils from Year 1 through to Year 5 who may require additional help managing their emotions, behaviours, and learning needs.

No two days will be the same, making this an ideal opportunity for someone who is adaptable, proactive, and committed to making a real difference.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide dedicated support for a Reception pupil and a Year 3 pupil with high SEND needs.
  • Support pupils with SEMH needs and emotional regulation difficulties.
  • Build positive and trusting relationships with children.
  • Support pupils both inside and outside of the classroom.
  • Help children engage in learning activities and access the curriculum.
  • Implement behaviour support strategies and emotional regulation techniques.
  • Promote resilience, independence, and positive behaviour.
  • Work closely with teaching staff, SEND professionals, and school leaders.
  • Support other pupils across Years 1 to 5 when required.
  • Contribute to a safe, structured, and nurturing learning environment.

The Ideal Candidate

The successful applicant will:

  • Have experience working with children with SEND, SEMH, or behavioural needs.
  • Be calm, resilient, and able to remain professional in challenging situations.
  • Understand the importance of consistency, routine, and relationship building.
  • Have strong behaviour management and de-escalation skills.
  • Be confident supporting children who can become emotionally dysregulated.
  • Have excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Be committed to helping vulnerable children succeed.
  • Have experience in education, youth work, social care, support work, or a similar setting.
  • Hold a relevant Teaching Assistant qualification (desirable but not essential).
